Mobile Phone MastWelcome to Cryo Systems CryoSystems designs and manufactures complete microwave systems for wireless networks operating in frequencies up to 15GHz. The Cryogenic Mast Head Amplifier (CMHA) incorporates filters, duplexers and low noise amplifiers and is designed for top-of-mast deployment next to the antenna.

The Company targets commercial applications in the worldwide wireless communications markets and its systems can be incorporated into new network builds, or retrofitted to existing base stations.

We exploit the exceptional materials properties of high temperature superconductors (HTS) to create high-performance RF filter systems. These are combined with the properties of cryogenic low noise amplifiers. The CMHA developed by CryoSystems offers a unique combination of enhanced sensitivity to improve signal reception, and exceptional selectivity to reject interfering signals.

  • Sensitivity: Filters fabricated using HTS materials have ultra-low insertion loss, so a clean signal is achieved with effectively no attenuation
  • Selectivity: Because of the minimal insertion loss sharp or “steep sided” filters can be designed to reject adjacent interfering signals with a high degree of precision. Precise filtering with conventional materials would generate unacceptable insertion loss. We can also design filters to “knit together” non-contiguous bandwidth so that it can be treated essentially as one single block of spectrum
  • Size: The exceptional low loss characteristics of HTS mean that planar circuit designs can be used, which are smaller by a factor of 25 than conventional devices

CryoSystems has taken cryogenic RF system design several steps further by producing a system which is 30% of the weight and 25% of the volume of its main competitor

CryoSystems has developed a CMHA for 3G mobile communications, and has also designed 2G systems. We are involved in projects relating to fixed wireless broadband, satellite, and defence communications.

The Cryogenic Mast Head Amplifier (CMHA)

Key Features

  • Integrated system of superconducting filters and cryogenic low-noise amplifiers
  • Major performance benefits over standard Mast Head Amplifiers
  • Lightweight and compact for tower mounting
  • Passive cooling system; no fans required
  • Modular duplex system for multiple antennae
  • Compatible with wireless applications up to 15GHz
  • Compelling cost/benefit proposition

3 rd party independent tests have shown that cryogenic mast head amplifiers:

  • Increase base station range and therefore reduce the number of base station sites required for equivalent coverage by 25% to 35%
  • Reduce dropped call rates by approximately 40%
  • Reduce unsuccessful call rates by approximately 20%

These benefits translate directly into reduced capex, reduced opex and increased revenue per base station.

Other key customer benefits include:

  • Convenient retrofit solution to network capacity/coverage issues
  • Longer handset battery life through enhanced receiver sensitivity
  • Improved environmental credentials
  • Improved relationships with planning authorities
